What Is PlayStation Plus and Which Plan Should You Choose?

If you own a PS5 or PS4, you'll run into PlayStation Plus sooner or later, usually the first time you try to play a paid game online. But Sony's subscription is much more than a multiplayer pass. Depending on the plan, it also gives you free monthly games, a catalog of hundreds of PS4 and PS5 titles, classic games and cloud streaming. In this guide, I'll explain what each tier includes, how much PlayStation Plus costs in 2026, and how to pick the plan that's actually worth it for you.

What is PlayStation Plus?

PlayStation Plus is Sony's subscription service for the PS5 and PS4. Depending on the tier, it includes online multiplayer, monthly games to claim, cloud storage for your saves, discounts in the PlayStation Store, Share Play, a catalog of downloadable games, classic titles, game trials and cloud streaming.

It's PlayStation's answer to Xbox Game Pass, although the two services work quite differently, as we explain in our comparison of Xbox and PlayStation consoles. You don't need a membership for every online game. Most free-to-play titles, such as Fortnite, Apex Legends and Call of Duty: Warzone, work online without it. Most paid PS5 and PS4 games, however, require PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer.

The three PlayStation Plus tiers

PlayStation Plus Essential

Essential is the basic plan for people who mainly want to play online. It includes online multiplayer for paid games, a few monthly games that you can add to your library, cloud storage for your saves (handy when you replace your console), exclusive Store discounts and Share Play, which lets a friend watch or join your game. It's the right choice if you buy games individually and don't need a big catalog.

PlayStation Plus Extra

Extra includes everything in Essential and adds the Game Catalog, a rotating library of hundreds of downloadable PS5 and PS4 games, plus a selection of Ubisoft+ Classics titles. For most players who try several new games a year, it's the best value, as long as you're fine with games joining and leaving the catalog over time.

PlayStation Plus Premium

Premium includes everything in Extra and adds the Classics Catalog with games from older PlayStation generations, time-limited trials of new games and cloud streaming of supported games in eligible countries. Premium members in supported markets can also stream selected games from the cloud straight to the PlayStation Portal, without turning on their own PS5. In countries without cloud streaming, Sony sells a cheaper version called Deluxe instead, which keeps the classics and trials but drops streaming.

The 12-month plans give you the lowest monthly cost if you're sure you'll stay subscribed. A one-month plan can still make more sense if you only want to play one multiplayer game for a few weeks, finish a specific catalog game or try cloud streaming while traveling. Prices differ by country, so check the PlayStation Store while signed in to your own account to see what you'll actually pay.

Monthly games vs catalog games: what do you keep?

This is the part that confuses most people. Monthly games have to be claimed during the month they're offered. Once claimed, they stay in your library and you can play them whenever you have an active membership, even if you cancel and come back years later.

Games from the Game Catalog and Classics Catalog don't need to be claimed, but you lose access when a game leaves the catalog, when you move to a lower tier or when your subscription ends. Games you buy are yours either way, although playing them online still needs a membership.

Sony usually announces which games are leaving the catalog in advance, so check the "Last chance to play" section before you start a long game.

How to subscribe to PlayStation Plus

  1. Sign in to the PlayStation account you want to use. Make sure the account's country is right, because it usually can't be changed later.

  2. On PS5, open PlayStation Plus from the home screen, or go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Payment and Subscriptions > Subscriptions. You can also subscribe in the PlayStation App or on the PlayStation Store website.

  3. Choose Essential, Extra or Premium, and pick 1, 3 or 12 months.

  4. Pay with a card, PayPal where available, your PlayStation Store wallet, or a gift card or voucher from the same region as your account.

  5. Check your renewal date and renewal price. Automatic renewal is usually switched on by default.

How to get PlayStation Plus without a credit card

You can add money to your account with an official PlayStation Store gift card and then buy the membership with those funds. Just make sure the card is from the same region as your account, because a US code won't work on a European account, for example.

In some countries, Sony may still ask for a backup payment method for recurring subscriptions, so if you don't want the plan to renew, turn off automatic renewal right after you subscribe. Buy codes only from Sony, major retailers or established digital stores, and avoid anyone selling "shared account" access.

How to redeem a PlayStation Plus code

On PS5: open the PlayStation Store, select the "…" menu at the top, choose Redeem Codes, then enter the 12-character code and confirm.

On PS4: open the PlayStation Store, scroll to the bottom of the sidebar, choose Redeem Codes and enter the code.

On the web or in the PlayStation App: sign in, open your account or Store menu, choose Redeem Code and enter the code. Menu names sometimes change after updates, but the option is always in the Store or account section.

How to upgrade, downgrade or cancel

When you upgrade to a higher tier, Sony usually charges a prorated amount for the rest of your current membership, and you'll see the exact cost before you confirm. A downgrade takes effect at your next renewal, so you keep the higher tier until the paid period ends.

To cancel, open subscription management on your console, in the PlayStation App or on the PlayStation website and turn off automatic renewal. You'll keep your benefits until the end of the period you've paid for. After that, monthly and catalog games stay installed but won't launch until you renew.

Is PlayStation Plus worth it?

Essential is easy to justify if you regularly play paid games online, want your saves backed up and claim the monthly games. Extra is often the best overall plan if the catalog saves you from buying a few full-price games each year. Premium is only worth it if you'll actually use cloud streaming, trials and classic games.

A simple way to decide is to compare the extra cost with the games you'd otherwise buy. In the US, Extra costs $55 more per year than Essential, so if the catalog replaces just two $30 games, it has already paid for itself.

Premium costs another $25 a year on top of Extra, so ask yourself whether streaming, trials and classics are worth that much to you. Just don't count games you would never have bought anyway, and remember that catalog games can leave.

If you often play competitive multiplayer games, the subscription pairs well with a pro controller like the DualSense Edge, which lets you remap buttons and add back paddles. If you're still deciding which console to buy in the first place, a PlayStation 5 with Extra is one of the cheapest ways to build a big game library quickly.

Frequently asked questions

Can family members share one subscription?

Partly. If you turn on Console Sharing and Offline Play on your main PS5 or PS4, other accounts on that console can use some benefits, including online multiplayer and installed catalog games. Benefits tied to your account, such as monthly game claims, cloud storage and discounts, aren't shared.

Does one membership work on both PS4 and PS5?

Yes. The same account can use its benefits on both consoles, although some games are only available for one of them and save compatibility depends on the game.

Do monthly games disappear?

Not once you've claimed them. They stay in your library and you can play them as long as you have an active membership. Catalog games are different, because they can leave the service.

Do free-to-play games need PlayStation Plus?

Usually not. Major free-to-play games like Fortnite and Call of Duty: Warzone can be played online without a membership.

Final thoughts

PlayStation Plus Essential covers the basics, Extra is the best all-round option for people who like trying new games, and Premium is a specialist plan for cloud streaming, trials and classics. Don't choose a tier based on the size of the library. Choose it based on the games and features you'll actually use before they rotate out.
